ABUSE, DOMESTIC VIOLENCE & NEGLECT

ABUSE: THE RESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE – (20 minute video)
Residents report what they feel is abuse and their list of concerns may surprise your staff. Not only do their comments include the obvious, but also many things you would not think of unless you were a resident. From their perspective, negative attitudes, lack of respect, waiting for care, and even staff not wearing nametags are unacceptable. These residents give you the perspective of what it’s like to be on the other side of care.


CHARTING NEW WATERS (35 minutes)

Designed to raise awareness of barriers and issues faced by women with disabilities when they try to end the violence in their lives. Interviews with disability advocates and criminal justice personnel with three dramatic vignettes portraying women with disabilities (including stroke, paralysis and developmental disability) who have experienced or are currently experiencing violence in their lives. Excellent training tape as an introduction to elder abuse prevention and intervention using collaboration of community service agencies. Three separate tapes:
(Part I): The Hidden Sorrow/An Overview (24 minutes)
This overview of the problem examines definitions of “elder abuse” and “elder neglect,” causes and manifestations of abuse through conversations with the actual victims, medical staff, and elder abuse professionals. Additionally, it provides an opportunity to examine individual feelings about “ageism.” As well as the cultural view of aging and old people.

(Part II): Intervention Strategies (26 minutes)
Using four actual cases of elder abuse, social workers discuss intervention strategies which involve conducting assessment, developing a service plan, coordinating community services, using the legal system, and building trusting relationships.

(Part III): Difficult Choices (20 minutes)
Using one elder abuse case in detail, the caseworker, lawyers, and other elder abuse professionals examine the civil rights of individuals to live their own lives without intervention from the state. Issues of competency, the reluctant victim, and quality of life are raised.

ELDER ABUSE: FIVE CASE STUDIES (40 minutes)
Video only
Explores the issue of family abuse against an older adult very personally from the point of view of five different victims. Their candor in telling about their situations gives the viewer(s) insight into the ambivalent feelings of older abuse victims as they try to find resolution to their pain. In the context of their struggle, various interventions are examined that can be used to help stop the abuse, including counseling, shelters, supportive services and legal action. Handout available.

Dr. Randall Lockwood provides authoritative information on this documentary hosted by A&E regarding the proven links between animal cruelty and random and/or family violence. A well done presentation that was filmed in Colorado and features appearances from various state legislators (both pro and con this issue). Includes footage of animal abusers in the act of abusing a small dog.

THE SILENT CRY: ELDER ABUSE ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING (23 minute)

An elder abuse task force provides this primer on collaborative community service agency work to intervene and prevent elder abuse. Uses graphic portrayals and photos.

WHAT’S AGE GOT TO DO WITH IT? – (13 minute video)

Looks at the devastating effects of various forms of abuse upon older women of our society. The primary message is that older women can be victims of abusive behavior even though the problem is often ”silent and invisible”. Age is no excuse for abuse. It’s never to late for an abuser to stop the abuse and for an older woman to get out of an abusive relationship. Video contains disturbing scenes and is not intended for a general audience. Information presented on caregiver stress and abuse, why older women don’t seek help. Abuse by adult children and other family members, psychological abuse, and recognizing sexual abuse. WHEN HELP WAS THERE: FOUR STORIES OF ELDER ABUSE (19 minutes)

Takes an ethnically diverse look at elder abuse. Four separate cases of either physical, emotional or financial abuse are presented: A Hispanic mother threatened by her son; an African-American woman physically abused by her husband; an Asian couple put out on the street by their son-in-law; a Caucasian man defrauded of possessions and bank accounts by a “friend.” The video tells how each of these individuals were helped and supported by a network of social services – legal interventions, support groups, and social services.

Topics cover prevalence, dimensions of causation, treatment modalities, suicide risk, issues for nursing homes and public policy. Includes interviews with actual patients who have experienced or are experiencing depression in late life; as well as congressional testimony about this important issue. The message that depression in late life is treatable and there is a variety of helpful treatment approaches, comes through. ETHNIC COMMUNITIES AND DEMENTIA: MAKING A DIFFERENCE (20 minutes)

Highlights four local projects each targeting a different ethnic population including Chinese, Hispanic/Latino, Asian/Pacific and Native American.
1) The Chinese community developed a one-stop approach to dementia care.
2) The Hispanic/Latino Community used bicultural and bilingual advocates to serve as liaisons between Latino clients and ADC programs.
3) The Asian/Pacific Community project offered family education, counseling, one on one counseling for caregivers and linkage with other services such as transportation and home care.
A caregiver support group offered emotion support to those affected by the changes dementia brings in the Native American Community. They also offered educational programs and linked tribal members with a variety of social and long-term care services. It promotes sensitivity and respect of people with disabilities, while recognizing that all of us share some of the same values, interests, hopes, and dreams. It uses humorous vignettes to deliver its disability awareness message. It covers a wide variety of disabilities and human differences. Excellent for professionals and staff who work with people with disabilities. Also recommended for general public and businesses to improve employee customer service. Designed to train personnel of financial institutions about what to look for and how to react when scam artists or family members are financially exploiting older adults. It emphasizes the bank’s ability to assist their older customers in extremely stressful situations. A victim of fraud tells her story and Colorado experts in the fields of gerontology, adult protection and law enforcement appear in the tape.

A description by Barbara White of her beating, kidnapping and robbery. A bank was tricked into giving the perpetrator her money. She does a great job and the video shows how the events unfolded, so it’s more than watching someone talk. Good to show to banks, victim assistance people, police and others.
